Solve challenging subsurface flow problems with PetraSim

PetraSim is the graphical module for the TOUGH2 family of simulators. Developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, TOUGH2 and its derivatives are recognized for their powerful simulation capabilities for fluid flow and heat transfer in porous and fractured media.

The TOUGH2 codes have been applied to problems ranging from Yucca mountain groundwater flow to multi-component environmental remediation. PetraSim makes the power of TOUGH2 accessible to modelers through an interactive 3D environment that includes mesh generation, parameter definition, and display of results.

PetraSim significantly lowers the barriers to TOUGH2 use by freeing the analyst to focus on the model, while automatically handling the complex details of TOUGH2 input and output files.

PetraSim includes TOUGH2 (version 2), T2VOC, TMVOC, and TOUGHREACT (version 1.2) executables. TOUGH version 2.1 and TOUGHREACT v2.0 are supported with licensing purchased through LBL. PetraSim also includes limited support for TOUGHREACT v3.32 and TOUGH3.

The TOUGH2 (version 2) executables packaged with PetraSim include changes to the TOUGH2 source code available only with PetraSim. This includes the output of CSV files (used for results visualization within the interface) and a number of changes designed to improve geothermal models. There are detailed in this paper and include (but are not limited to) the following:

– Specify the start-up time for a well on deliverability. This avoids the need for multiple restarts when modeling a number of make-up wells in field-scale geothermal production forecast.
– Specify the productivity index (PI) and flowing pressures for each layer of a well on deliverability.
– IAPWS-IF97 correlations for pure water added to the standard TOUGH2 EOSs. These extend the use of TOUGH2 to near-critical conditions (T>350°C) and to geothermal geopressured conditions (P>1000 bara).
– IAPWS 2008 viscosity formulation for pure water and steam added to the standard TOUGH2 EOSs.
– Grouping of source/sink cells using source/sink names. This makes it possible to correctly assign production when multiple wells intersect the same cell.
– Writing of SAVE file at specified time steps.
– Additional results output in GOFT file for EOS2 and EWASG.
– New capillary pressure and enthalpy options in EOS2 and EWASG.
– Improved convergence during EOS2 change of phase.

Applications for PetraSim and the simulators it supports include:
– Coupled process modeling (thermal, hydrologic, chemical, mechanical, biological)
– Carbon sequestration and other types of injection
– Performance assessment of nuclear waste repositories
– Geothermal reservoir studies
– Vadose zone hydrology
– Fate and transport of volatile organic compounds
– Design and analysis of laboratory and field experiments

PETRASIM FEATURES

3D Model Creation
PetraSim supports completely interactive 3D model creation. The user can import existing 3D layer data and use it to define the model geometry.

Users can assign material properties to the layers and define wells through the model.

Mesh Generation
PetraSim supports multiple meshing options. The most basic is a rectangular mesh in which cells are assigned properties based on the region in which they are located. This mesh provides the most reliable convergence properties. If it is desired to have the mesh conform to the layers, this can be accomplished using either a rectangular or Voronoi conforming mesh.

Support for TOUGH EOS Options
The TOUGH codes have been developed for many different Equations of State (EOS). Each equation of state describes a different set of components.
For example, EOS3 describes water and air which can exist in single or two-phase conditions and can be used for groundwater or geothermal applications. EOS7C includes methane-carbon dioxide or methane-nitrogen gas mixtures. Applications include subsurface geologic carbon sequestration sites and natural gas reservoirs. The components modeled include water, brine, non-condensible gas (CO2 or N2), gas tracer, methane, and heat.

All EOS module executables are optimized and integrated into PetraSim, so no further compilation is required. The user just clicks and runs. If you have developed a modified variation of TOUGH, support is provided to pre-process and post-process those results also.

Integrated Results Visualization
The user can immediately view results. PetraSim includes time history and 3D iso-surface, vector, and contour plots. Data can be exported to spreadsheets or in a simple format appropriate for graphic software such as TECPLOT.

Helpful Input Visualization
All input is organized in such a way that the user understands what the input value is and where it will be used. For example, when relative permeability input is specified, the equations are given and a dynamic preview of the permeability curves is displayed.

Other Powerful Features Include:

– Complete interactive model creation and results display
– 3D model manipulation and visual feedback
– Organization of input in dialogs that help the user find the desired controls
– Integrated grid and cell editing, including the ability to add extra “non-grid” cells for use in boundary conditions
– Automatic generation of the simulator input file
– Integrated 3D iso-surface and contour plots
– Integrated time history plots and data comparison
– Integrated code executables for all supported versions
– Faster simulations with optimized TOUGH2 and T2VOC executables

NEW FEATURES IN PETRASIM

See a list of new features added to PetraSim in recent years.

PetraSim v2022.3.1003
New features/bug fixes in the 2022.3.1003 release include additional support for TOUGH3 along with other new features. Unlike the TOUGH2 simulator that is still packaged with PetraSim, TOUGH3 is not included and must be purchased through Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.

New Features/Improvements
– TOUGH3 simulations can now be run through the interface using TOUGH3 executables purchased through LBL (previous versions of PetraSim required that TOUGH3 simulations be run through a command line outside of the interface).
– During a TOUGH3 simulation run, the user has the option of creating new input files based on updates to the SIM file, or using the existing input files. This allows the user to update INFILEs created by PetraSim, and then run the simulation using the edited input files.
– TOUGH3 COFT, FOFT and GOFT data can now be displayed in the PetraSim interface through the Cell History, Connection and Sink/Source Plots.
– A new TOUGH3 CSV Convertor tool is now installed with PetraSim and is used to convert TOUGH3 output to a format compatible with PetraSim.
– The File | Load Cell Flow Rates tool, which is used to load cell-based sink/source data using an ASCII file, now works with files that reference either the Cell Name and Cell ID (previous versions of PetraSim required that Cell Names be used).
– A new “cornerpoint” CSV file is created by PetraSim when SIM files are saved or run. These includes mesh geometry that can be used to transfer PetraSim meshes to other programs, such as Amarile’s RE-Studio. Cornerpoint files are only created for rectangular meshes. This feature is disabled for polygonal and radial meshes.
– The interface has been updated with numerous notes indicating when a feature is specific to TOUGH2, and cannot be used for TOUGH3.
– The Edit Cell Data dialog has been updated to show the X and Y spacing for rectangular meshes.

MODELS SUPPORTED BY PETRASIM
PetraSim supports the TOUGH2 family of codes, including TOUGH2, TOUGHREACT, TMVOC. TETRAD is also supported through a legacy version of PetraSim v4.2.

FLUID PROPERTY MODULES
PetraSim supports most of the Fluid Property Modules in the TOUGH family of simulators.

GEOTHERMAL APPLICATIONS
PetraSim and TOUGH2 have long been the standard for geothermal reservoir simulation, with users spanning the globe.
